Setting Up Your Artist Account

What are some best practices on how to set up my artist account?

Updated over 3 years ago

When you are accepted as an artist on our platform, you will receive an email with a link to setup your Artist account.

Here is a brief guide on best practices to create a successful profile.

Primary Genre

Choose the genre that best defines your style of music. That can be a tough ask if you make music in multiple genres. Or your tracks don’t stay within one genre. But if you had to pick one, then that would be your primary genre.

Secondary Genre

Similar to Primary Genre but optional.

Profile Photo

This is your main photo that will show up across Deep Sounds and will make a big impression on potential customers.

Some tips for choosing the right images:

  • Content & Personality - Customers on the site will know you are a musician so don't feel the need to include a photo of yourself performing music (unless you want to). Try to find a photo that expresses the emotion of who you are and what your music is about rather than your profession.

  • Lighting - Make sure the lighting isn't too dark or bright.

  • Color - Try contrasting colors to help your photo stand out from the background.

  • Background - Use a simple background to keep the focus on you

  • Photo Quality - Use a high quality camera or a photo with a professional photographer. Try to avoid selfies as they look low quality and can give the wrong impression.

  • Framing - Make sure you're properly framed within the cropped photo.

Cover Photo

This is a larger, wider photo that will show up at the top of your track and artist detail page.

Tips for Cover Photos:

  • You want to find a cover photo that represents your brand. It can be another picture of you or whatever else.

  • Use pictures that are landscape orientation for best results. Portrait photos will crop very badly here.

Pro Tip: Unsplash is a great resource for royalty free images if you need any images for your cover photo or album art.

Bio

  • Personality - Show your personality in your writing. Whether you're chill, goofy, or serious, try to break away from generic statements and include a bit of your character.

  • Past Work - In a few sentences or less, describe some of work you've done in the past that you were proud of, thought was cool, or was noteworthy in general.

  • Not a Resume - Avoid making the bio section feel like a resume and listing the school you went to, and every career milestone (unless really noteworthy).

  • Know Your Audience - The people on this website will know you are a musician due to the nature of the platform. They will want to make an emotional connection with your work and yourself. Don't feel the need to exclusively talk about yourself as a musician and feel free to open up as who you are- an emotional human being.

  • Keep It Short - 750 characters is a lot less than it sounds. Show enough about yourself and what you've done without getting too lengthy.

PRO Information

A PRO (performance rights organization), such as ASCAP or BMI, ensures that you collect royalties whenever your music is used. Enter the organization to which you belong, writer name, writer IPI number, publisher name, and publisher IPI number. This will help customers who will use your music for broadcast accurately report your information.

Payment Methods and Deposit Account

Deep Sounds uses Stripe to process all payments to you. You will need to create a stripe account during your initial setup.

You will enter in your basic personal information along with linking your bank account. You will receive all payments from Deep Sounds directly to the bank account that you linked.

Ready To Upload Tracks

Once all those are complete, you are ready to start submitting your tracks to the platform! Check out our Best Practices Guide for Uploading Tracks.
